	Wednesday, June 9, 2021 Cavies Cavia Porcellus of the Caviidae family. Or Cavy for short. Cavy isn't actually short for caves. It derives, through a series of jumps, from the native Brazilian word for rat. Guinea pigs don't really live in caves in nature, because they don't exist in nature! Although their closest genetic relatives do live in tunnels or small caves. Their ancient genetic memory causes them to prefer to stay indoors, where they're safe from predatory birds. They evolved as a domesticated animal, like the dog. Only cuter.
